This has been my favorite project so far this year in art. I had never used paper mâché before and that had a major role in this piece. At first, I wasn't a huge fan of the actually map pages from the book; I wanted mine to be different. I practiced using it on a quick piece to make sure I knew I was ready to use it for this map project. My idea was to make an elevation map of islands and the ocean waves. My first step was crunching pieces of tissues and soaking them in mâché This helped me create a ripple effect to the board. I then piled on a bunch of tissues with the mâché each island slightly uneven. Once I was finished, I placed a very thing paper over everything and let it dry. I took a risk and used my experience with watercolor and painted the mountains and ocean with different shades of browns, greens, blues and purples. My last step was to draw a compass on a transparency. It felt like there was an empty space to the project, so that is why I took a chance and added the compass to the space. |
